SUSANT PATTNAIKCO-FOUNDER AND MDINTHINKS

Technologist, inventor, entrepreneur, and speaker, Susant Pattnaik’s story flies in the face of the stereotype of today’s young generation. All of 25, Susant Pattnaik’s journey is already into its 10th year. It began in a hospital at the age of 15. An interaction between a paralysis patient who could not speak and a nurse helped him see that there was no way for caregivers to communicate effectively with patients. The incident had a profound impact on him and soon became the genesis for his first idea - the breathing sensor apparatus. This device allowed paralysed patients to use their breath to control a wheelchair, operate electrical appliances, and even send text messages.Today, Susant Pattnaik has over 15 inventions to his credit, is a TED speaker, and has won over 21 awards including two consecutive National Innovation Foundation Awards received from former President of India, Late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and Smt. Prathibha Devisingh Patil respectively. He is also the co-founder of InThinks, a technology company that aims to impact 50 million users through problem-solving innovation. Initially focused on the needs of the differently abled, InThinks has now diversified into the consumer sector offering innovations ranging from the anti-rape ‘She Watch’ to a power bank that charges using ambient lighting. Susant Pattnaik is a shining example of the fact that social impact and enterprise are not mutually exclusive. We believe his story will inspire a generation and hope that it spurs you on to share your own.

AMARENDRA SAHUCO-FOUNDER AND CEONESTAWAY TECHNOLOGIES

In India, renting a house as an unmarried person can seem like an insurmountable challenge. As with any great entrepreneurial story, a brush with discomfort leads to the inception of an idea. Nestaway is one such story. Amarendra Sahu co-founded Nestaway in 2015 after going through an exhausting rental search in Bengaluru, a process he called ‘frustrating, tiring, and humiliating’. Nestaway went straight to the root of the problem by combining a smart search engine with managed services. In a short span of three years, the firm has redefined the face of the Indian rental sector by creating a category, leading it, and raising over $94 million in funding, including an investment from Ratan Tata. With an MBA from IIM Bengaluru, where he started his first venture, Amarendra Sahu is no stranger to setting his sights high. In the medium-term, he would like to see Nestaway rank alongside some of the great Indian unicorns. If his track record is anything to go by, few would be willing to bet against that vision.Prior to this, he co-founded Brizztv Media Labs, the world's first cloud-connected content delivery platform, and worked as a software engineer at Cisco, Juniper Networks, and Alcatel-Lucent. Amarendra identified a problem that a large number of us normally faced and he made the process of renting a home a possibility available to everyone at the touch of a button. Originally a delicacy from Puri, what was first called the khira mohana, is now known as Pahala rasagola. The first reference to this sweet is made in a version of Balaram Das’s 16th-century epic, Dandi Ramayana where it is said to have been used as offerings in temples in Odisha. If there is a dish that defines how Indian sweets are perceived, it has to be the rasagola. Bikalananda Kar is Odisha’s most known and beloved confectionery chain. Known for popularising its syrupy rasagolas, Bikalananda Kar has become a household name throughout Odisha over the past few decades. Its founder, Bikalananda Kar, was born in an impoverished family and began his career as a worker in a sweetmeat shop. He eventually saved enough money to buy his very own sweet shop in Salepur, 25 km from Cuttack, Odisha, and began his journey to success in 1954. Due to the overwhelming success of his business and an innate desire to contribute to the community, Bikalananda made a considerable donation to the Salepur College in 1964, the year of its establishment. After his death in 1971, his sons took over the business and furthered his philanthropic vision with the establishment of the Bikalananda Kar Trust, a scholarship fund for needy students, in 1984. As the first institute of its kind in India, it provides a source of livelihood for people in the region. From a business standpoint, the BK Training Institute is also looking to create enough apprentices to further the establishment of Bikali Kar franchises across the country.

Cuisine of Odisha - Pitha

Food and Odia culture are inextricably linked. Culinary traditions, secret ingredients and recipes that date back hundreds of years are followed even today and are passed on from one generation to the next. No discussion of Odia food is complete without talking about one specific signature delicacy - the versatile pitha. A classic Odia dessert, a pitha is a rice cake cooked with different varieties of flour. There are multiple preparations of the types of pithas, and they differ in each region of Odisha. It is an iconic part of Odia cuisine and classifies as a meal by itself. There are many different types of pithas and several ways to make them - they can be steamed, baked or even deep-fried. Most pithas are specific to the festivals that are observed in the state. Some examples of the different types are the Enduri pitha during Prathamashtami, Chitau pitha during Chitalagi Amabasya, and Poda pitha during Raja Parba. The list of all the preparations is extensive, and there is a specific kind of pitha to match almost every Odia festival. Every version of this dessert requires focus and skill, regardless of being made either domestically or professionally. It is apt to say that pithas are more than just food, they’re a symbol of Odia culture.

Noting that the best companies need to make critical decisions at speed, the government has created GO PLUS (Government of Odisha Portal for Land Use and Services), a GIS-based system that offers location information, available infrastructure utilities, and details of industrial land use. GO PLUS is a land bank of over 1,25,000 acres. Every inch of this available land is mapped and analysed to present users with the hyper-focused detail required to make significant investment decisions. Institutional and individual investors can now easily source detailed information about the availability of plots, location attributes such as connectivity to towns, transport such as rail and road, and utilities. The system also offers details of physical, and social infrastructure. The platform allows prospective investors to evaluate and identify industrial land suited to their needs right from the comfort of their desks. It has proved to be a success as a result of its efficient use of technology, the teamwork of all stakeholders involved and the transparency of all information related to industrial land in Odisha. Odisha’s drive for progress is centred on a commitment to creating a world-class investing and business experience and GO PLUS is a testament to this focus.

They work as a gateway to the rest of the world from Odisha, while helping boost India’s economy. Assets that contribute to the State’s accessibility, Paradip and Dhamra Ports are both an integral part of Odisha’s industrialisation. To realise this vision, the State is looking to fasten development for the two ports. Numerous developments are supporting Paradip Port's development design to increase its capacity from 277 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 325 MTPA by 2025. These include a Smart Industrial Port City that’s spread across 6727.17 acres, a solar energy park of 20 MW spread over 90 acres of land, a multi-modal logistics park (MMLP) committed by Container Corporation of India (Concor), a four MTPA pelletisation unit by Thriveni Earthmovers Ltd, a wood park and a dedicated food park for edible oils. For Dhamra and its expansion, the State is aiming to increase its capacity from 25 MTPA to 100 MTPA by setting up a 5 MMTPA Liquefied Natural Gas terminal, 8000 sq.m container yard and a Liquefied Petroleum Gas terminal. The Paradip-Dhamra waterway and East Coast Economic Corridor are making Paradip one of the most sought-after industrial zones in the country. While providing a safe working environment to all user, contractors and employees, the ports in Odisha are prime examples of how the success of industry and infrastructural growth go hand in hand.

ALUMINIUM PARKANGULMINERALS AND METALS

With its abundant natural resources, Odisha is central to India's industrial development. This contribution is most evident in the state's contribution to the growth of mineral and metal sector in the country. Odisha is the country's largest producer of aluminium with over 54% of India's smelting capacity and the presence of aluminium behemoths like NALCO, Hindalco and Vedanta give credence to that fact. Odisha however is looking beyond metal production and has set her vision to 2030, by when she intends to achieve over 50% value-addition to the primary metals produced in the State. This vision is made plausible through a progressive policy framework and innovative infrastructure development. The Aluminium Park in Angul is a shining example of this innovative approach. The project implemented through a JV between NALCO and IDCO (Industries Development Corporation of Odisha) is a first-of-its-kind facility in the subcontinent that will allow industries to obtain molten aluminium from the smelter directly and in a short span of time has generated demand for 4.1 lakh tonnes.   Designed to ensure continuous supply and minimise logistics costs, the Aluminium Park is inspired by Sohar Aluminium's cluster in Oman. An investment of Rs 180 crore in the project's infrastructure sees the park merit its status as an industrial manufacturing hub equipped with a logistics infrastructure facility, training centers, dedicated administration, and a display and trade services facility. This facility, spread over 223 acres of exclusive industrial park area, offers state-of-the-art infrastructure with world-class service. Facilities such as 24*7 power supply and subsidies for employment generating industries have made the Aluminium Park central to the state's development efforts.  The value of the project is boosted by its location, which is surrounded by industrially developed regions and also offers access to a skilled talent pool. The park's immediate success signals immense promise for the development of the sector and will also drive the growth of several downstream and ancillary industries in the state.

Odisha’s contribution to Indian Independence

India's growth story makes for compelling reading the world over, perhaps only outdone by the country's journey to independence. Our fight for freedom is one of the most inspiring tales of all time and laid the foundation for the values we hold dear today - unity in diversity through respect for cultural differences, and a belief in the collective purpose. Odisha is proud to have contributed to the liberation of the world's largest democracy. An inspiring set of people make up the list of Odisha's most prominent freedom fighters - Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Utkal Gourav Madhusudan Das, Pandit Gopabandhu Das, Ramadevi Choudhury, Chandra Shekhar Behera, Dr Harekrushna Mahtab, Birsa Munda and Bakshi Jagabandhu. To only name them, however, does not do justice to the hundreds of thousands of people who fueled a movement that lasted for over 200 years, one that began shortly after the British occupation of Odisha in 1803. 1804 saw the first scenes of agitation in Khurda when Jayee Rajaguru, counsel to King Mukunda Deva II, became Odisha's first martyr. This event fanned the flame for other great patriots like Ramakrushna Samanta Singhara, Chakhi Khunti, Surendra Sai, Madho Singh, and Hati Singh. Surendra Sai's led a fierce rebellion in Sambalpur over 30 years before the Great Rising of 1857, a fight he fought until 1864. Cuttack, Puri, Balasore, and Sambalpur became hubs for meetings in response to the Swadeshi Movement in 1905, driving support for domestic goods and the boycotting of foreign products. The inextricable link between nationalism and religion meant that devotees were discouraged from offering foreign-made cloth to Lord Jagannath. This fight went beyond revolt and also focused on development of a new generation of revolutionaries, with seven centers in Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Sakhigopal, Balasore, Bhadrak, and Soro driving the training and guidance of Congress workers and volunteers.   When the Satyagraha, the nonviolent movement centered on devotion to the truth, reached Odisha, it was a catalyst for another notable aspect of the campaign - the emergence of women. Women like Rama Devi and Malai Devi rallied their troops and held a women-only march as part of the Satyagraha movement.  Rani Bhagyabati, the Patamaheshi of Kujanga, followed in 1930 with her own group of 500 women protesters. Odisha is incredibly fortunate and proud to have been part of India's freedom movement, an integral component of an even greater whole. Today, it is with respect for every moment, every person, and every single victory that we proudly say 'Jai Hind!'

The state now plans to further this position of prominence through an aggressive policy framework and development of quality infrastructure, to be seen as a destination of choice for investments in these areas.  Infrastructure has a substantial role to play in this regard. Odisha houses 2, 74, 000 MT of cold storage facilities. Two Mega Food Parks, in Rayagada and Khurda, are currently under development and will offer ready-to-use infrastructure complete with testing labs and skill development centers, providing a comprehensive ecosystem for growth. he state is welcoming investments in the food sector, particularly rice processing, support infrastructure, vegetable processing, and poultry. Anji Reddy, (founder of Dr Reddy's Laboratories), Madhukar Parekh, co-founder of Pidilite Industries, and, Narotam Sekhsaria, chairman of ACC Cement and Ambuja Cement Group are just some of the notable personalities who have graduated from the institution. In November 2017, Indian Oil and ICT signed an MoU, endorsed by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, to establish a campus in Bhubaneswar, a move that recognises Odisha’s strategic importance to India’s development. With every programme at the institute set to be India's first-of-its-kind, the facility will carry out world-leading research in the areas of Chemical Engineering, Petrochemicals, Textiles, Polymers, Pharmaceuticals, and Energy. Equally important is ICT Bhubaneswar's focus on skilling and training. Students will receive a stipend during industrial internships to ensure that education is affordable while dedicated Centres of Excellence will also drive the development of high-quality Indian talent. Spread over a 100 acres, once at capacity, this institute is expected to make a progressively substantial contribution to Odisha's rapidly growing industrial sector.
